Komboa Jamii Initiative is launching the Skills 4 Success project, designed to equip youths, girls, women, and teen mothers in Alego Usonga Siaya with practical skills in tailoring, hairdressing, carpentry, and bead making. This project seeks to provide participants with hands-on vocational training that will empower them economically, enabling them to generate sustainable livelihoods and become self-reliant.
The Skills4Success project focuses on marginalized groups, particularly young women and teen mothers, who often face barriers to accessing education and employment opportunities. By offering training in diverse, marketable skills, the initiative creates pathways for economic independence while also reducing the community’s dependence on traditional forms of income, such as fishing and farming, which are often unreliable due to environmental changes around Lake Kanyaboli.
Tailoring classes will cover sewing techniques, garment design, and production, while hairdressing training will focus on hairstyling, braiding, and salon management. Carpentry training will teach basic woodworking skills, enabling participants to craft furniture and other products, while bead making will introduce them to the art of creating jewelry and decorative items. All of these skills are in demand in the local market, giving participants the opportunity to either start their own businesses or find employment in these fields.
By the end of the program, participants will not only have gained valuable vocational skills but also the confidence and knowledge to manage small enterprises and improve their economic standing.
Expected Outcomes
Provide Participants With Marketable Skills that can directly lead to job creation and entrepreneurship. Graduates of the program will be equipped to start small businesses in tailoring, hairdressing, carpentry, or bead making, or seek employment in these fields, boosting their personal incomes and contributing to the local economy.
Economic Empowerment of Women and Teen Mothers. These groups often marginalized and excluded from traditional employment, will gain practical skills that enable them to achieve financial independence. This empowerment not only benefits the women themselves but also has a ripple effect throughout the community, as women with stable incomes are more likely to invest in their families and contribute to local development.
To Foster A Sense Of Self-Reliance And Confidence among participants, many of whom may not have had formal education or training opportunities before. By learning new skills and applying them in real-world settings, participants will gain a sense of accomplishment and agency over their own futures.
To Reduce Youth Unemployment in the Region, addressing one of the key challenges faced by the Alego Usonga community. By providing young people with the tools to create their own employment opportunities, the project will help reduce poverty, improve livelihoods, and contribute to long-term community resilience.
