In 2023, Komboa Jamii Initiative launched the “Sanitation for Sustainability” project to address pressing sanitation issues in local communities. The initiative was born from the alarming discovery that many residents were defecating in bushes and farms, leading to significant health risks, especially during the rainy season when waste was washed into water sources used for drinking. Over six months, the project focused on educating communities about proper defecation practices and the importance of building toilets to protect public health and the environment. Through community meetings, workshops, and educational campaigns, participants learned about the link between sanitation and climate justice. The project promoted the construction of eco-friendly toilets and encouraged communities to take responsibility for their waste management, ultimately aiming to reduce open defecation and improve water quality.
Achieved Outcomes:
The “Sanitation for Sustainability” project successfully reached over 800 community members, raising awareness about the health implications of poor sanitation practices. As a direct result of the initiative, over 120 households committed to building sanitary toilets, significantly decreasing the practice of defecating in open areas. Community engagement led to a heightened understanding of waterborne diseases, with many residents adopting better hygiene practices. The project also facilitated the distribution of educational materials on proper sanitation and hygiene, equipping community members with the knowledge needed to maintain these improvements and protect local water sources from contamination.
Challenges Faced:
- Despite its successes, the project faced several challenges. A key obstacle was the ingrained cultural practices regarding defecation, which made some community members resistant to change.
- Additionally, there were financial constraints that limited the availability of resources for constructing toilets, and some households struggled to prioritize sanitation improvements amidst other pressing needs. Ensuring the proper maintenance of new toilets also presented a challenge, as many communities lacked the technical knowledge or financial resources for upkeep. To address these issues, Komboa Jamii Initiative plans to work closely with local leaders and stakeholders to secure funding and provide ongoing support and training, fostering a culture of sustainable sanitation practices within the communities.
